NINE PARTS OF SPEECH
Three little words you often see,
Are articles- a, an, and the.
A noun‘s the name of anything
As school, garden, hoop, or swing.
An adjective tells the kind of noun-
Great, small, pretty, white, or brown.
Instead of nouns the pronouns stand-
Her head, his face, your arm, my hand.
Verbs tell of something to be done,
To read, sing, jump, or run.
How things are done the adverbs tell,
As slowly, quickly, ill, or well.
Conjunctions join words together,
As men and women, wind or weather.
The prepositions stands before
A noun, as at or through the door.
The interjection shows surprise,
As ah! How pretty- Oh! how wise.
The whole are called nine parts of speech,
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.

Common and Proper Nouns
Nouns name something. Nouns name people, places, things, and ideas.
There are different kinds of nouns, common nouns and proper nouns.
Common nouns name general things and groups of things.
Example:

Proper nouns names a certain person, place, or thing. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.

Action Verbs

Helping and Linking Verbs
Most verbs show action. The verbs that do not show action are called helping and linking verbs.
A linking verb joins,or connects, the parts of a sentence to make it complete.

Whales are mammals.
The whale is large.
That whale was my favorite.
People were happy at the aquarium.

I was swimming in the ocean today.
I have eaten swordfish and sardines.
The turtles were hiding in their shells.
I am watching a movie.
Jan and Morgan are playing checkers on the porch.

The subject of a sentence includes all the words in the naming part. (green)

The predicate includes all the words in the telling part. (purple)
The predicate tells what the subject is or does.
Example
